Smilodon was a member of the sabre-toothed cat family, and lived during the ice Age which started over 1.6 million years ago. It was the largest member of the family, and had a powerful chest and strong front legs. It also had two long front teeth with edges like steak knives. It probably could not run fast for very long, and had to take prey by surprise. Likely prey included large bison, horse and mastodon, an extinct member of the elephant family.
